director, operations and member services chosen

The Union has hired its’ new Director, Operations and Member Services. Anticipated start date is February 24th. The position replaces the position of Director, Labour Relations, held by Dwight Wenham. Dwight is retiring on February 28th.

We will be welcoming Doug McLaren to the position. Doug has a trade union background in addition to a labour relations background in health care in British Columbia. He began his career in the Seafarers’ International Union in 1977 and worked his way up through the ranks until he was appointed Executive Vice-President of the SIU in 1989. He left Quebec and the SIU in 1994, did a one year contract with the Post Secondary Employer’s Association (of BC), operated his own Human Resources/Labour Relations Consultant business for four years, then moved to Children’s and Women’s Health Centre of B.C. in 1999. In his position with Children’s and Women’s he is familiar with the changing health care scene in British Columbia, the Employers and Unions involved, and the HEABC/NBA collective agreement which soon will cover the majority of UPN members. Among his experiences is negotiating collective agreements and handling grievances and arbitrations.

advanced diploma programs in psychiatric nursing

The Advanced Diploma Program in Psychiatric Nursing at Douglas College is offering three new specialty courses:

The Advanced Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing is a clinically focused program that will prepare rpns for the challenges and opportunities created by new initiatives in mental health care. The Program’s flexible scheduling (offered by distance education by mail or internet) allows nurses to continue working as they study. Graduates of the Advanced Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing are eligible to complete the Bachelor of Health Science (Psychiatric Nursing) degree at Open Learning University.
